  4. Need to remember it? Switch to a passphrase made of several words.

FAQ

How long should a PIN be?

Usually 4–6 digits for cards and phones; safes and keypads follow the device rules. Set the length with the slider.

How random are the digits?

They come from the browser cryptographic generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with no bias towards any digit.

Are passwords stored on a server?

No. Passwords are generated in your browser with the cryptographically secure crypto.getRandomValues and are never transmitted.

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters with all character sets. For email, banking and work accounts use 16 or more.

Why exclude similar characters?

To make the password easy to type by hand: 0 and O, 1, l and I are easy to confuse.

What is a passphrase?

Several random words in a row, like “Lake-Moon-Rich-Tune”. It is easier to remember, and with 5–6 words it is as strong as a long password.

What are “bits of entropy”?

A measure of unpredictability. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed. 64+ bits is strong, 100+ bits is very strong.
