FAQ
Is an 8-character password secure?
For sites that limit login attempts, yes, if it mixes upper and lower case, digits and symbols. Use 12–16 characters for email and banking.
Why do sites ask for at least 8 characters?
It is the shortest length at which a random password with all character types cannot be guessed quickly through a login form.
Are passwords stored on a server?
No. Passwords are generated in your browser with the cryptographically secure crypto.getRandomValues and are never transmitted.
How long should a password be?
At least 12 characters with all character sets. For email, banking and work accounts use 16 or more.
Why exclude similar characters?
To make the password easy to type by hand: 0 and O, 1, l and I are easy to confuse.
What is a passphrase?
Several random words in a row, like “Lake-Moon-Rich-Tune”. It is easier to remember, and with 5–6 words it is as strong as a long password.
What are “bits of entropy”?
A measure of unpredictability. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed. 64+ bits is strong, 100+ bits is very strong.
